Our story.
Eric Taylor founded the EGU. Eric Taylor and Kathy McTasney were both originally GMB members within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Eric is the Branch Chair and Kathy Assistant Branch Secretary. Both Eric and Kathy worked tirelessly for many years. The phone never stopped ringing! Individuals clearly had a need that was just not being met by their own trade union, and with the apparent gap that needed filling, the EGU was born.
Over time, the organisation grew and the union gained more support; One of our early members, Brenda Lee Grant focused her endeavours within Tower Hamlets, where it had been identified that there was a large need for support and she duly became the Branch Secretary. Our membership continued to grow and we now have members outside of London and within the Local Authority.
The EGU is based on the Isle of Dogs and our executive committee meets on a regular basis. Whilst we are small, we are effective with a plethora of experts with experience and knowledge to assist in any circumstance.
Eric has now, unfortunately, passed away, however, the team are committed to continuing with his hard work in ensuring that all employees are supported within the workplace.
