The EGU’s accounts are registered with the certification officer every year and they show that whilst we are a small trade union we have the unique ability to be dedicated to our members and whilst we are open to seeking and forging good relationships with employers for the purposes of good industrial relations, our promise to our members is that we will always work for their best interests and we have their backs covered.
The EGU was founded by Eric Taylor and Kathy McTasney who were both originally GMB members within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Eric as the Branch Chair and Kathy was the Assistant Branch Secretary. Both Eric and Kathy worked tirelessly for many years and the phone never stopped ringing; individuals clearly had a need that was just not being met by their own trade union, and with the obvious gap that needed filling, the EGU was born.
Over time, the organisation grew and the union gained more support; One of our early members, Brenda Lee Grant focused her endeavours within Tower Hamlets, where it had been identified that there was a large need for support and she duly became the Branch Secretary. Our membership continued to grow and we now have members outside of London as well as within the Local Authority.
The EGU is based on the Isle of Dogs and out executive committee meet on a regular basis. whilst we are small, we are effective with a plethora of experts with experience and knowledge to assist in any circumstance.
Eric has now unfortunately passed away, however the team are committed to continue with his hard work in ensuring that all employees are supported within the workplace.
